FIELD NOTE — Tourism Operators & DMO Crisis Coordination

1 min read

Observation: Tourism operators can become isolated communicators during a disaster or rapidly changing situation. They may focus on their own business communications without coordinating with the destination marketing organization (DMO) or other regional tourism partners.

Insight: A tourism operator should establish a relationship with their DMO before a crisis happens and understand how the DMO can support and amplify communications.

The DMO may have access to:

  • Official or verified regional information

  • Crisis communication resources and templates

  • Established relationships with government and emergency-information sources

  • Larger communication channels and audiences

  • The ability to amplify individual operator messaging

  • Destination-wide messaging that can help prevent conflicting information

Strategic Opportunity: Tourism operators should know in advance:

  • Who their DMO contact is

  • Where verified information will come from

  • What information they are responsible for communicating themselves

  • What information should be referred to an authoritative source

  • How their messaging can align with the broader destination message

  • How they can ask the DMO to amplify important updates

Key Principle: A tourism operator does not need to become the official source of truth during a disaster.

They need to communicate accurately about their own business, coordinate with the destination, direct people toward authoritative information, and avoid speculation.

Aurora Pixel Services Insight: There may be an opportunity to help tourism operators build a simple crisis communication framework before they need it—connecting their own communication systems and messaging with the resources available through their DMO.

The goal is not to create more work for the operator during a crisis. It is to make sure they already know who to communicate with, what to say, where to direct people, and how to get their message amplified.
